The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has praised Pope Francis for stating that attacks on Israel are anti-Semitic. During a private meeting in Rome with Jewish leaders, Pope Francis said, “To attack Jews is anti-Semitism, but an outright attack on the State of Israel is also anti-Semitism. There may be political disagreements between governments and on political issues, but the State of Israel has every right to exist in safety and prosperity.” Further, at his weekly address, the Pope stated, “The Council, with the Declaration ‘Nostra Aetate’, showed the way: ‘yes’ to the rediscovery of the Jewish roots of Christianity; ‘no’ to any form of anti-Semitism and condemnation of any resulting injustice, discrimination and persecution.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“True to form Pope Francis has once again shown that he is a remarkable leader and a trusted partner of the Jewish people. These remarks are the latest example of his commitment to unequivocally speaking out against the scourge of anti-Jewish bigotry, and it underscores the key role he has played in promoting Jewish-Catholic relations. Indeed, since his election, Pope Francis has repeatedly denounced anti-Semitism, calling it a sin. As we witness the growing defamation of the Jewish state, and the increasing assault by those who question her very right to exist, the Pope should be lauded for rightly declaring that anti-Zionism equals anti-Semitism. The  ADC has always maintained that those who vilify and malign Israel, who deny her sovereign right to exist, and who promote the venomous boycotts, divestments and sanctions movement should be treated as haters and bigots. This is an important statement that will further enhance the strong bond of friendship that the Church, Israel and the Jewish people have enjoyed.”
