B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation commission statement on Harmony Day

Today, Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement to mark Harmony Day:

“On this unique and important day, all Australians come together to celebrate the incredibly rich and vibrant mosaic of the cultures, family backgrounds, ethnicities, languages, genders, lifestyles, sexual orientations, and faiths that make up our beautiful and tolerant country. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share their stories and to be proud of their differences, as well as understand the importance of successfully and harmoniously living together as a supportive community. Such occasions also remind us of how vital it is that we are aware of each other’s struggles and challenges, and how significant it is that we re-affirm our commitment to diversity, social cohesion and respect. Yes, we are different, but first and first and foremost we are Australians, working together to ensure that each and every Australian feels that they belong. At a time when hate speech and other manifestations of racism and xenophobia are on the rise, it is more vital than ever that we work towards preventing and countering all forms of bigotry and prejudice and build a nation of justice, equality and dignity, where racial discrimination and intolerance have no place.”
