B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission remembers the Roma and Sinti victims of Auschwitz

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting hatred in all its forms, has paid tribute to Roma and Sinti victims who were murdered by the Nazis at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. About 23,000 Roma and Sinti died (“Gypsies”) at Auschwitz-Birkenau and in total, hundreds of thousands of Roma and Sinti were exterminated in the Holocaust.

Dr. Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement

“The Jewish people join the Roma community on Roma Holocaust Memorial Day in commemorating the horrific murder and suffering their people endured at the hands of the Nazis. We all have a duty to remember and to honour the millions of non-Jews who were innocent victims of Hitler’s demonic regime and do all that is necessary to combat the evil of hatred and inhumanity. At a time when the danger of forgetfulness is ever present, especially as the number of living witnesses is dwindling, and genocides are unfolding around the world, it is all the more important that we reject those extremists who seek to divide societies and generate national and transnational conflicts and those radical forces seeking our destruction. The lessons of the past must stir us all to counter discrimination and injustice whenever and wherever they appear.”

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
