B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission deplores election of Syria and Venezuela to U.N. Human Rights Committee

February 28, 2016

unhrcThe B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has deplored the election of Syria’s ambassador to the U.N’s Special Committee on Decolonization and the appointment of Venezuela as its chair.  The committee was set up five decades ago to oppose “subjugation, domination and exploitation”.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“The election of these two notorious and serial human rights abusers to leadership positions on a committee entrusted with upholding key human rights once again demonstrates the hypocrisy and absurdity of the U.N. system. The Syrian regime has conducted a murderous campaign that has resulted in the mass killings of nearly half a million of its citizens and has been accused by the U.N of  “extermination” of its own people, while Venezuela is guilty of reprehensible and  gross human rights violations. These appointments make a mockery of the principles and values the committee is tasked with defending, such as the right to self-determination and an end to “armed action or repressive measures against dependent peoples.”
