B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission denounces UNHRC anti-Israel resolutions

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), has denounced the five anti-Israel resolutions passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), one focusing on the Golan Heights and four singling out Israel for opprobrium concerning the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The USA and Togo chose to vote against all resolutions while the UK voted against the Golan Heights resolution and abstained on the remaining four, noting that if the ongoing bias against Israel continued it would be voting against all permanent “Item 7” resolutions in the future. Further, the UK strongly criticised the UNHRC for failing to condemn Palestinian terrorism. A statement issued by the British Mission, read, “Nowhere is the disproportionate focus on Israel starker and more absurd than in the case of today’s resolution on the occupation of Syria’s Golan. Syria’s regime butchers and murders its people on a daily basis. But it is not Syria that is a permanent standing item on the Council’s agenda; it is Israel. We cannot accept the perverse message sent out by a Syria Golan resolution that singles out Israel, as Assad continues to slaughter the Syrian people. Israel is a population of eight million in a world of seven billion. Yet since its foundation, the Human Rights Council has adopted 135 country-specific resolutions; 68 of which against Israel. Justice is blind and impartial. This selective focus on Israel is neither.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“Once again, the ADC is not surprised by the censorious vote which is par for the course in the demonstrable anti-Israel atmosphere that pervades the UNHRC, a council that is known for its unconscionable hostility towards the Jewish state. At the same time, we are pleased that a growing number of countries are gradually acknowledging and speaking about the unceasing and blatant bias that Israel is repeatedly subjected to in these sittings. We applaud the USA and Togo for their forceful and moral stance in opposing the raft of resolutions and welcome the UK’s condemnation of the UNHRC’s unfair treatment of Israel and warning that it would stop endorsing anti-Israel resolutions unless the body dramatically changed in approach on Israel.”
