B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission deeply troubled by Nazi flag displayed and sold at Balmain market in Sydney

Balmain Market Nazi flagThe B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has expressed its strong concern about the display and sale of a Nazi flag openly displayed and offered for sale at the Balmain market in Sydney.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chair of The ADC, issued the following statement:

“This is flat out obscene and outrageous. It is unacceptable that 70 years after the Holocaust, there are individuals who are using markets to display and make money from the sale of Nazi related items that represent the most horrific human suffering in history as well as the ultimate embodiment of racism, prejudice and bigotry. Quite clearly, there are customers for these abhorrent materials that seek to make Hitler’s regime and the systematic murder of six million Jews and millions of others appealing. Those who are trafficking in such vile and hateful objects, that are poisoning our society, are completely out of step with the Australian values of multiculturalism, inclusiveness and decency, and we need to directly and publicly tackle this worrying phenomenon. It is our collective duty to keep fighting the flood of Nazi memorabilia that is being hawked in various places and poisoning our society, and send a thundering message that these hateful materials have no place within our midst. I am very concerned that such perverse items will end up in the wrong hands, namely in the possession of white-supremacists who will use it to promote, celebrate and glorify their vile causes. The ADC will continue its long-standing campaign of turning the spotlight and ostracising those who sell Nazi collectibles and will continue to call for the removal of such sordid items. We urge those who are entrusted with the allocation of stalls at the Balmain market to do the right thing by taking all the necessary steps to stop the display and sale of these disturbing articles in the future.”

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
