July 27, 2015

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC)  has praised RomanRomanian President Klaus Iohannisian President Klaus Iohannis for signing into law new legislation that makes the public denial of the Holocaust illegal. The legislation also bans fascist, racist or xenophobic organizations and symbols. About 280,000 Jews and 11,000 Roma were murdered during the pro-fascist regime of dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“We extend our appreciation to President Iohannis and welcome this responsible, timely and decisive act of leadership which clearly demonstrates that  the Romanian government  is strongly committed to fighting extremism, racism and fascism. By enacting this law, the Romanian parliament has made it abundantly clear that it will not tolerate Holocaust deniers and that it will punish anyone who seeks to desecrate the memory of the victims.  As anti-Semitism spirals out of control in Europe,  we encourage all political and religious leaders to follow suit and to show that they are serious about combatting and condemning this hateful and dangerous movement.”
