B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission and B’nai B’rith Australia-New Zealand mourn the passing of Elie Wiesel

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting hatred in all its forms, and B’nai B’rith Australia-New Zealand (BBANZ) have mourned the passing of Holocaust survivor, Nobel Prize winner, author and teacher Elie Wiesel at the age of 87.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC and Morris Tobias, President of BBANZ issued the following statement:

“With deep sadness and sorrow, we mourn the loss of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel. In a world devoid of true Heroes, Elie Wiesel was a guardian and a champion of justice and compassion and a voice for the victims of violence and oppression around the world. An activist and a witness for the murdered Jews of Europe, he repeatedly taught us about the moral imperative of speaking out and standing up for the vulnerable and the persecuted, and eloquently warned about the dangers of indifference. Fearless in his determination to combat racism, hatred and genocide in places such as Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda, he pleaded with us to remember, as he wrote in his memoir Night, that “Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.” His tireless championship and work in preserving the dignity of all people, his powerful chronicles of the Shoah, and his incomparable legacy will serve as inspiration and a blessing for generations to come. His moral leadership, voice and passion will be sorely missed.”

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
