The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has expressed its alarm about the decision by the NSW DPP not to charge  Ismail al-Wahwah, head of extreme Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, after he reportedly called on people to “rid” the world of the Jewish “hidden evil”. The decision came after the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies lodged a complaint over the remarks with the Anti-Discrimination Board. The Anti-Discrimination Board determined a “serious breach” of race hate laws had occurred and passed the case to NSW police and the DPP. However, both decided not to take any action.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“I am very alarmed by this decision.   The fact that someone can make such a public display of hate, urging others to kill the Jewish people, and not be charged is outrageous.  We as Jews know better than most, that ugly, extremist words, laced with incitement, can lead to devastating violence. If you call for Jews to be murdered, you should be prosecuted. That should be the standard. The failure by the DPP to act impacts  on our ability to live in a society that ensures protection, dignity and equality for all. The message being sent here is that it’s open season on Jews and other ethnic minorities and that those who want to advance their agenda of radicalism can do so without consequence.  Such dangerous incitement will only escalate unless and until effective legislative mechanisms are put in place to counter such dangerous conduct.”
