ADC welcomes sensible and fair resolution on Israel by the South Australian Legislative Council

The ADC has welcomed the sensible and balanced resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict passed by the South Australian Legislative Council last week. The resolution endorses a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, urges “both sides to resume direct negotiations in good faith,” and calls on the Federal government to recognise the state of Palestine once the two sides have successfully negotiated a two-state solution.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“In contrast to the one-sided and counterproductive motion passed by the South Australian Lower House earlier this year, which lays the blame squarely with the Jewish state, labelled Israeli settlements a, “major obstacle to peace”, and called on the Federal government to unilaterally recognise the State of Palestine, this motion embraces a more sensible and fair approach. We applaud members for the passage of this vote, which has gone a long way in restoring our confidence that Australian parliaments have a constructive role to play in peacemaking. As we have said on many occasions, the only path to reconciliation and resolution of this dispute is to encourage the Palestinian Authority to resume direct negotiations with Israel. We urge other state parliaments to follow the spirit set here by affirming their support for bi-lateral talks between the two parties, and reject any unilateral manoeuvres which circumvent this process.”
