ADC welcomes Labor MP Sam Dastyari’s call to fight extremism in Australia

The ADC, Australia’s leading organisation fighting anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, has welcomed the call by Labor MP Sam Dastyari for his party to resist, “turning a blind eye to extremism” and for stating that, “that religious extremism was just as dangerous as white nationalism.” The senator also supported the call by Senator Christensen and the ADC to ban neo-Nazi Mike Enoch from entering Australia.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“This was an important speech by Senator Dastyari. We too are deeply concerned by the rise of religious and nationalist extremism. The government, opposition all members of parliament have a key role to play in combatting the ongoing harassment of those who being targeted because of their religion, race and ethnic background and in countering the surge of prejudice in Australia. We note with profound concern the unsettling increase in incidents of anti-Semitic and religious bullying at schools, and have no doubt that this pattern is a result of the messages young adults are getting and acting on. It is difficult not to stress the vital importance of public figures, such as Senator Dastyari speaking out against all forms of bigotry, xenophobia and other forms of racism, since he, and his colleagues, have a unique platform to place these issues on the national agenda and conversation. The ADC looks forward to working with all members of our parliament to fight the scourge of religious intolerance and crimes, and to create an Australia without hate.”
