ADC welcomes the construction of a Holocaust memorial sculpture in Caulfield

The ADC has welcomed the decision by the Glen Eira Council to establish a permanent Holocaust memorial in Caulfield, the first its kind in Australia. The initiative of Councillor Joel Silver received the unanimous  support of the Glen Eira Council and the council will now explore possible locations and will seek community involvement and artistic consultation. Councillor Joel Silver said, “This undertaking would not only be an important preservation of the memories of those who once walked these streets. It will fulfil a critical role in fighting the sinister individuals who engage in historical revisionism and Holocaust denial…Glen Eira must remember the Holocaust, and by supporting this initiative, we can ensure the community does so.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“Today, as we witness a resurgence of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial around the world, this Holocaust memorial is more timely and more necessary than ever. It will honour the memory of the victims of the Shoah, pay tribute to those who survived and who rebuilt their lives in Glen Eira, and commemorate those diggers who paid the ultimate price in the struggle to defeat Nazism.  This moral and just decision will ensure that no resident will ever forget the incomprehensible  atrocities of the Holocaust, and will remind present and future generations in the area about the importance of combating hatred and of working together for human dignity. We applaud councillor Joel Silver and the Glen Eira Council for fulfilling the ethical imperative of “Never Again” and for  bearing the obligations of remembrance.”
