ADC welcomes the Australian government’s support for Israel and for rejecting biased U.N Security resolution 2334

The B’nai B’rith Ant-Defamation Commission (ADC) has welcomed Julie Bishop’s statement that the Australian government would not have supported UN Security Council Resolution 2334 had it been a UNSC member. The Foreign minister stated that the “Australian Government remained firmly committed to a two-state solution, where Israel and a Palestinian state exist side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognised borders. Australia urges both sides to refrain from steps that damage the prospect for peace and to resume direct negotiations for a two-state solution as soon as possible.” She further added that, “In voting at the UN, the Coalition Government has consistently not supported one-sided resolutions targeting Israel.”

“We are tremendously pleased by Julie Bishop’s moral clarity in firmly rejecting this biased, anti-Israel UN Security Council resolution and convey our profound gratitude to her and to the Australian government for their steadfast support for Israel, friendship and leadership on this grave issue. It is obvious that the Australian government, unlike those who voted for this reprehensible motion and who threw Israel to the wolves, cares deeply for the security of Israel, and is genuinely interested in advancing real peace amongst Israelis and Palestinians. This expression of reassurance and sensible foreign policy is of particular value especially during this current attack against Israel and will be appreciated by Jewish communities not only in Australia, but also around the world. We welcome the Foreign minister’s constructive message and affirmation that the only path to a resolution of this conflict is through direct negotiations and not through the imposition of terms by international bodies.”
