ADC statement on Australia Day 2017

Today, Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), issued the following statement to mark Australia Day 2017:

“All across our great, beautiful and unique nation, Australians are gathering with family and friends to reflect and to toast this special day which reminds us of what a privilege and an honour it is to be an Australian. As we mark this momentous occasion, the ADC  pays its respect to Australia’s first people, the original custodians of the land, for their immense contribution and guardianship, and thanks the men and women who serve and defend our nation, and those who keep us safe through the vital services they deliver every day. Today, we celebrate  the vast array of cultural and religious group that make our country the incredibly diverse, compassionate and tolerant place we are fortunate to call home. Australia Day also serves as an inspiration for all of us to strive to overcome our community’s shortcoming and to come together to ensure that the blessings and the priceless  gifts of democracy, freedom and equality will endure for future generations Though Australians do not always agree, we must always cherish our differences and treat each other’s views and beliefs with respect. Above all, we must reject all forms of hatred, prejudice and bigotry which threaten the cohesive fabric of this hopeful, generous and vibrant country. These are common values we hold dear and a vision of the future we all share.  We are only at our best when we are united. As proud Australians, we wish you all a happy and memorable Australia Day.”

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading civil rights organization fighting racism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
