ADC praises Australian journalist Caroline Marcus for standing up to anti-Semitism and joins forces with her to fight hate

The ADC has praised journalist Caroline Marcus for speaking publicly about the anti-Semitic abuse she suffered at the hands of former ACA colleague Ben MCormack. In her column, Ms Marcus, whose family had survived the Holocaust, revealed that Mr MCormak would often place cartoons depicting Jews as Hitler, and allegedly wrote on Facebook that Israel was a “f***ing international disgrace.” He also said, referring to the Holocaust, “Your 70 years of special treatment are over.” Further, in her column, Ms Marcus admits that after making a complaint about her colleague’s behaviour, that this was “easily one of the most difficult and lonely periods of my life.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“We commend Caroline Marcus for showing the courage to stand up against the evil of anti-Semitism and hate, and to speak publicly about her torment and pain. Clearly, her brave stance will inspire young men and woman, to not only take pride in their faith and heritage, but to never be silent while the forces of intolerance and prejudice flourish. We look forward to joining forces with Ms Marcus to counter the virus of racism and Jewish-bigotry, and hope that her example is emulated by other journalists. We stand ready to work with Ms Marcus and other people in the media industry to address this growing problem with real action.

In response to the ADC’s praise, Caroline Marcus said:

“It behoves all of us to stand up to antisemitism, not only because we know from all too recent history where it can lead, but because it is simply wrong. There’s been a worrying trend across the western world to accept anti-Semitic behaviour in the way other forms of racism and discrimination would never be tolerated, partly because it is so often disguised or justified as criticism of Israel. We all have the right to feel safe and free from harassment in the workplace. Antisemitism has no place in our offices or our streets.”
