ADC applauds U.K. Government’s Adoption of anti-Semitism Definition

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, has applauded the decision by the U.K government to adopt a definition of anti-Semitism,  which is similar to the one adopted by the U.S. State Department and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The wording will help  police, councils, universities and public bodies in order to “call out” anti-Semites, according to the British Prime Minister, Theresa May. The IHRA definition states that, “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.” In her announcement of the adoption, Prime Minister May said: “It is unacceptable that there is anti-Semitism in this country. It is even worse that incidents are reportedly on the rise. As a Government we are making a real difference and adopting this measure is a ground-breaking step. t means there will be one definition of anti-Semitism – in essence, language or behaviour that displays hatred towards Jews because they are Jews and anyone guilty of that will be called out on it.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“This very welcomed and impactful decision will greatly assist in clarifying the various manifestations and expressions of anti-Semitism to those who are intimately involved in the fight against this escalating problem, especially law enforcement officers and judges. It is also sends an unequivocal message to the public that the British government will do all it can to effectively stem the dramatic surge in anti- Jewish bigotry in Britain and that it is strongly committed to the security of the Jewish community.  The IHRA definition provides  a clear elucidation and description of anti-Semitism, and we extend our deepest thanks to Prime Minister May  for showing leadership on this issue and for her various statements on the dangers and unacceptability of anti-Semitism since her election to the highest office in the land.”

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading civil rights organization fighting racism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
