ADC applauds Australia for voting against five anti-Israel resolutions at the U.N

The ADC has applauded the Australian government for speaking out and voting against five anti-Israel resolutions passed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), including ones that label Israeli settlements as illegal, calling on Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights, urging an economic boycott of the territories, and asking the international community to stop arms sales to Israel, critical to the defence of the state. Britain, along with Croatia, Congo, Georgia, Panama, Rwanda, Slovakia and the Ukraine abstained, while the US, Hungary and Togo rejected the resolutions.

As a response to the resolutions, US Ambassador to the U.N Nikki Haley said, “When the Human Rights Council treats Israel worse than North Korea, Iran and Syria, it is the council itself that is foolish and unworthy of its name. Today’s actions make it clear that the organization lacks the credibility needed to be a true advocate for human rights. When that happens, as it did today, the Council fails to fulfill its duty to uphold human rights around the world. The United States continues to evaluate our membership in the Human Rights Council. Our patience is not unlimited. Today’s actions make clear that the organization lacks the credibility needed to be a true advocate for human rights.”

ADC Chairman, Dr Dvir Abramovich, issued the following statement:

“We applaud Australia’s commitment and courageous leadership in pushing back against these efforts to isolate Israel and for standing as a principled voice of reason. True to form, the UNHRC has once again shown its relentless, institutionalised bias and enmity towards the Jewish state in what can only be described as a circus of shame. The willful blindness that the UNHRC displays towards Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations, as well the abhorrent human rights violations occurring around the world, while singling Israel out for censure, should be condemned by all nations. Pressuring and threatening anyone that sells arms to Israel, vital for the state to defend itself against its enemies, is immoral and outrageous and betrays the indifference that this commission has for the security and well-being of Israeli citizens. Such resolutions, like a long list of others before, only serve to further discredit this body and demonstrate the need for urgent and serious reform which we hope Australia and its allies will lead.”
