Eddie McGuire in hot water over ‘anti-Semitic’ comments

Eddie McGuire has been accused of making an inappropriate joke in the most recent episode of hit game show Millionaire Hot Seat.

The TV stalwart, who also serves as president of the Collingwood Football Club, was talking with contestant Serena Greenberg, who was trying to win money to pay for her parents to fly in from overseas and visit their grandchildren.

McGuire asked if her father was Jewish, which she confirmed.

“I reckon it would have been hard getting pocket money from them.”

Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dr Dvir Abramovich told the Herald Sun their organisation had received several complaints about the comments.

He said although entertainers were given “a lot of leeway”, they still had an obligation to avoid hurtful stereotypes.

“Denigrating any group by implying that they are stingy and cheap is always inappropriate and never funny,” he said.

McGuire told the Herald Sun the joke was directed at himself and his own family, as he is of Scottish heritage.

“We had a laugh and moved on.”
