Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chair of The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), issued the following statement to mark Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day 2016.
“We join Israel in celebrating and honouring its 68th anniversary of independence, a remarkable story of longing for self-determination and the triumph of hope and belief. Today, Israel is a dynamic nation, a global symbol of dynamism and creativity. For nearly seven decades, the Jewish State has been a shining example of thriving democratic rule, progress and freedom in the Middle-East. Let’s recall that the State’s Declaration of Independence announced that Israel, “will be based on freedom, justice, and peace, as envisaged by the Prophets of Israel. It will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants, irrespective of religion, race, or sex. It will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education, and culture.” Still today, despite the various unprovoked wars and terror campaign waged against its people, Israel has never cowed to fears and has defeated its enemies that are committed to its destruction. Always, it remained devoted to a durable and just peace with the Arab world and the Palestinians. Facing many momentous challenges throughout, such as anti-Semitism, economic warfare, and delegitimization, which she has risen and tackled admirably, Israel’s inspiring success in so many fields is a living monument and testament to the strength and resilience of the Jewish people. Australia and Israel, close partners and steadfast allies, share many values and ideals. On behalf of the ADC, we stand proudly with Israel and wish her continued growth, prosperity and peace in the future, and a Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach.”
