Melbourne, Australia… The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has welcomed the appointment of former British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair to chair the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation, a European based organisation dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia.

ADC Chairman, Dr Dvir Abramovich, issued the following statement:

“At a time of worsening anti-Semitism in Europe and violent attacks against Jews around the world, having a leader of Mr Blair’s stature assume this role and lead a wide-ranging campaign against extremism and prejudice is welcomed news. As British PM, and recently as the Mid-East envoy for the Quartet, Mr Blair has demonstrated that he is a staunch supporter and friend of the Jewish people and the state of Israel.  We agree with Mr Blair that” Intolerance is tearing the fabric of our society” and that, “Racism and discrimination in the name of religion must be tackled with tough new laws,”. The ADC is confident that Mr Blair will ably spearhead the battle against hate speech, incitement, and the growing defamation of Israel, as well as champion efforts to foster dialogue and reconciliation.”

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
