Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“We are pleased by the announcement that Glen Eira Council is initiating this investigation into the comments made by Councillor Oscar Lobo. As we have stated previously, Jews should never be blamed for being the victims of hate-motivated violence. The accusation that Jews draw attention to themselves and therefore are guilty for the abhorrent and irrational prejudice directed against them is one of the most enduring and damaging anti-Jewish canards.  To repeat: Would Councillor Lobo lecture women that they would not have to worry about being assaulted if they did not draw attention to themselves? At a time of escalating anti-Semitism and the threat of radicalism, it is vital that we reject this kind of rhetoric, and stand united in declaring that the crime of anti-Semitism is solely the fault of anti-Semites, not Jews. We once again urge Councillor Lobo to admit that he was wrong, and to unequivocally apologise for his hurtful and divisive words.”
