B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission welcomes Facebook’s new community standards

June  2015

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has welcomed the update by Facebook of its community standards, saying that it’s an important move in the fight against online hate speech.

5-6-15 ADL Report ADC section

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, issued the following statement:

“This is a meaningful step in the global battle against online hate speech and we are pleased that Facebook has provided greater clarity about its community standards. It’s crucial that more detail, more user resources, and more transparency have been provided on what is acceptable in the areas of  bullying, harassment, violence and hate speech, which includes content that vilifies and attacks people because of  their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, sex, gender or gender identity. The ADC has been a long-time advocate for a safe and respectful social media platform that encourages open debate and an exchange of ideas, and recently joined the ADL’s Best Practices for Countering Cyberhate alongside such internet giants as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Google. In light of this significant update, it is our hope that Facebook considers prohibiting other forms of hate speech and incitement such as Holocaust denial which is still a disturbing presence on Facebook, peddled by organisations and people whose only purpose is to promote bigotry and racism.”
