The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has labelled the vote by The Greek parliament urging the Greek government to recognise the state of Palestine as premature and counterproductive. The resolution was adopted during a special parliamentary seating attended by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who delivered an address following the passing of the non-binding measure.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We are surprised and disappointed by this counterproductive resolution which further internationalises the conflict and which disincentives the Palestinians from returning to the negotiating table which is the only way forward. This regrettable measure, which failed to denounce the relentless wave of murderous violence against Israel, will embolden Abbas to continue with his rhetoric of incitement and unwillingness to seriously engage in direct talks with Israel. As Australia, and most of the international community have acknowledged, Palestinian statehood can only be realised within the setting of genuine dialogue and meaningful negotiations. When we reflect that Gaza is ruled by the terrorist and genocidal Hamas, who openly calls for the destruction of Israel, and the West Bank is governed by the unelected Abbas, one wonders what non-existent State of Palestine is the Greek parliament urging its government to recognise. Greece should play a constructive role by demanding that the Palestinian Authority accept bi-lateral negotiations with Israel, rather than promote unilateral measures that undermine the chances for peace and security for both sides.”
