B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission honours Courtenay Dempsey With its Speaking out Against Hatred Award

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting hatred in all its forms, has honoured Essendon player Courtenay Dempsey with its Speaking Out Against Hatred Award, presented to individuals who courageously stand up and speak out against racism and prejudice. The player had been the victim of racial vilification and talked publicly about the pain and chilling impact it had on him and his family.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“As we celebrate NAIDOC WEEK and Multicultural Round, it’s timely that we recognize and honour Courtenay Dempsey for his spirited commitment and leadership in promoting respect and inclusivity, and for his courage in speaking vigorously and publicly against the virus of racism and bigotry. We need sportspeople like Courtenay who will stand up with a clear-eyed and principled conviction and say no to any manifestation of intolerance and discrimination wherever and whenever it appears.  Courtenay Dempsey perfectly embodies the values of Australian multiculturalism and that of a respectful and inclusive community, and his actions serve as an example for all to emulate. There is no place for hatred in Australia, and we are delighted that Courtenay is a champion for our mutual quest to end prejudice and foster tolerance.”

In accepting the award, Courtney Dempsey said that, “It was a real honour and a privilege to be presented with this award— I haven’t received such a significant recognition before. Racism will still be around, so it’s important that we strengthen the education around these issues amongst the young generation.”

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
