The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has congratulated Rabbi Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi of Britain and of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, on winning the 2016 Templeton Prize for his efforts to counter religious extremism and violence while “affirming life’s spiritual dimension.”
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Rabbi Sacks on receiving the 2016 Templeton Prize. There can be no more deserving winner. Throughout his life, Rabbi Sacks has made an exceptional and inspirational contribution to tackling the challenges of religious violence, and vigorously promoting the values of pluralism, justice, democracy and respect. In an era of increasing terrorism and radicalisation, his writings, speeches, and compassionate call to confront intolerance and hatred have empowered many individuals and groups. Rabbi Sacks has always shown that he is committed to the noble ideals of human rights and interfaith dialogue, and has worked tirelessly to bring communities closer together. This prize celebrates his moral and courageous leadership in bridging the divide between different faiths and cultures and in making the future for the next generations brighter. We hope that this award galvanises others to follow in the footsteps of Rabbi Sacks and helps him actualise his goals for a more peaceful world.”
