The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has condemned the bias motivated attack against 13-year Sikh Melbourne school student Harjeet Singh who was threatened with violence and whose turban was pulled off while travelling on a bus home.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“I am outraged by this bias-motivated incident and decry this outburst of prejudice toward Harjeet Singh.  Such attacks not only harm the individual victim, but also deeply affect the entire community. Australians of all faiths, nationalities, and ethnicities should feel secure on the buses of our city without the fear of being singled out for vilification because of their appearance, religion or background. Such intolerance must never find a home in Australia and this episode is a sad and distressing reminder that hate remains a force in our society and that it must be fought.  We must always counter discrimination whenever and wherever it occurs with all the tools available to us. The Jewish community knows all too well what it is like to be victimised by bigotry and has always believed that it is the duty of each one of us to stand as one when the values of diversity and multiculturalism are undermined by racism.”.
