The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, has applauded the vote by the United Methodist Church (UMC), one of the largest denominations in the United States, against four resolutions calling for divestment in companies that do business in Israel at their General Conference. The ADC also commended the UMC for withdrawing its membership and pulling its financial support, and staff participation from the “U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation,” a group promoting boycotts of Israel.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We are heartened by this welcomed development that recognises the destructive and discriminatory effect of the BDS campaign, and applaud the recognition by the UMC that dialogue and a return to the negotiating table are the only paths to reconciliation. To single out and isolate Israel only hinders and harms peace building efforts between Israelis and the Palestinians. The UMC also acted responsibly by withdrawing from the hostile anti-Israel coalition “U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation”, a one-sided organisation that seeks to demonise Israel. The church must always foster and encourage constructive, good-faith efforts to address the complexities of this conflict, and must counter any activism that engages in the delegitimization of the Jewish state. We look forward to continuing our working with all faith-based groups to promote greater respect, understanding and communication between all religions and to help make this world free of intolerance, prejudice and hate.”
The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
