oscar_lobo Glen Eira CouncilThe B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has applauded the Glen Eira Council for a passing a censure motion that “unreservedly condemns” Cr Oscar Lobo for his comments that the Jewish community made itself a target of attacks by “drawing attention to themselves.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“Glen Eira Council did the right thing by censuring Oscar Lobo and in doing so sending a strong message that such remarks will not be tolerated at any level. Anti-Semitism has no place in the city of Glen Eira, in Victoria and in Australia, and we applaud the action taken by the council.  Like it or not, elected officials act as role models and bear a great responsibility for their words and their actions. Too many today are silent in the face of anti-Semitic displays and this principled vote shows how every leader has an opportunity to demonstrate their personal commitment to counter bigotry in our community. We reiterate our call for Councillor Lobo to apologise for his remarks and to show that he understands why they were so damaging and offensive and why they were clearly out of line.”
