ADC expresses strong concern over reports that the ALP is set to recognise a Palestinian state

The ADC has expressed its strong concern over reports that the NSW branch of the Labor Party will endorse a resolution recognising a Palestinian state at its conference later this month. Such a move will represent a dramatic shift in ALP policy that endured for nearly four decades, and will compel Opposition leader Bill Shorten to support an unconditional recognition of a Palestinian state if he wins the next federal election.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“A unilateral recognition  of a state  of Palestine at the NSW conference is misguided and short-sighted, and will only jeopardise the chances for peace. The ALP should act responsibly and in a non-partisan manner by encouraging the Palestinian leadership to abandon its reckless tactics and return to  the negotiating table, which is the only positive and meaningful framework that will lead to the creation of a Palestinian state. Such a proposed motion will also undermine people’s confidence in the ALP’s ability to play a constructive role in resolving the conflict and will justifiably lead them to conclude that the the ALP primarily blames the Jewish state for the absence of peace.”
