The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, has denounced the article “Aside from its hatred of Palestinians, Israel has scant regard for Australian sacrifice” penned by ABC presenter Peter Goers and published in the Sunday Mail. In the article, Goers accuses Israel of apartheid, describes Israeli soldiers as, “trigger-happy” and writes that, “Israel is guns and Moses. Israel is one long persecution of Palestinians.” He also claims that Israel has neglected Australian war graves.

“This shameful article, in which distortion and anti-Zionism trump reality, is a gross and deliberate twisting of the facts and does not belong in any mainstream newspaper. Depicting Israelis as hateful, gun totting, violent-religious zealots, Goers peddles baseless charges that will play into the hands of anti-Semites and reveals troubling attitudes that are a cause of concern given that they are espoused by a broadcaster on a publicly funded radio station. Denying Jews the right to self-determination in their homeland, he conveniently omits to mention that in a region of dictatorships Israel has established a robust democracy that ensures that its Arab citizens enjoy full rights, ignores the incessant incitement by the PA and that Hamas has openly called for Israel’s destruction, or that the IDF has the obligation to defend its citizens from the spate of terrorism by Palestinians that has claimed many lives. Goers seeks to delegitimize Israel by quoting the discredited Ilan Pappe who has advocated for a one-state solution and falsely accuses the Jewish state of apartheid, even though Israel has accepted a two-state solution and self-determination for the Palestinians, and has pursued this outcome through negotiations, withdrawals and peace treaties. “
The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
