The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), has welcomed the jailing of Nicole Boyle for a racially-motivated attack that occurred in Sydney in 2015. After boarding a train at Parramatta station, Boyle called a 15-year-old girl of Asian heritage a “chink”, and told her that she needed to go back to “eating rice”. She then dragged the girl by her hair and slapped her. Later, Boyle hurled racist slurs at a family of African and Pacific Islander appearance that was returning from a Rugby match.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chair of the ADC issued the following statement:

“We welcome this sentence which sends the very strong message that that those who perpetrate vicious race-motivated attacks will be held fully accountable. It is our hope that this jail term will assure members of the public that Australia is a respectful and multicultural place with no tolerance for bigotry and hate. Such abhorrent incidents are a sad reminder that people in our community continue to be singled out for violence because of their ethnic background and appearance. It also confirms the critical need for educational programs that teach young people about the importance of respecting people’s differences and that everyone should be made to feel truly welcome and safe in our society regardless of their religion, race, creed and sexual orientation.

The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
