The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), Australia’s leading organisation fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred, has condemned as outrageous the spray painting of a swastika on the car of a Jewish family in Bentleigh. The shocked residents woke up to find the revolting symbol daubed across their car last week.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We denounce vigorously this craven and repugnant display of intolerance. This cowardly vandalism reminds us that hate still remains strong right in our own neighbourhoods and how important it is to continue our fight against the growing problem of anti-Semitism. Make no mistake: this is a repulsive assault on people of all faiths and ethnic origins since the swastika is a potent symbol of the demons of racism and xenophobia, and still manages to instil fear and intimidation in the hearts of the victims. The family affected should know that they are not alone, and the entire community stands firmly with them in speaking up against the scourge of anti-Semitism and religious vilification. Melbourne is a welcoming and multicultural city, where all members should be able to live together harmoniously and safe from such attacks. I call on all leaders to unreservedly and publicly condemn such wanton acts of hate, whatever community is targeted, and to say in one strong and loud voice “not in our city!” We are confident that Victoria police will make every effort to identify those responsible and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.”
