The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has decried the defacement of restaurants at a shopping strip in West Footscray with Swastikas and white power slogans.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, issued the following statement:

“We decry in the strongest terms this disturbing act of bigotry which is an attack on the decency of all Victorians. The Nazi swastika is a universal symbol of hate that represents pure evil, and is meant to intimidate and instil fear within religious, ethnic and cultural groups. This type of hate has no place in Australia and runs counter to our country’s values of acceptance and respect for all faiths. Whenever such cowardly and despicable incidents happen, there is a chilling emotional damage to community members.  This is a sad and distressing reminder of the lengths people will go to express their prejudice and that Melbourne is not immune to this kind of threatening racism. It is our collective responsibility to do all we can to counter this kind of sickening Xenophobia and bias, and the ADC stands firmly with those affected.  We call on community leaders and residents across the state to come together to make their voices heard and to express their outrage at these troubling acts of intolerance. The ADC encourages anyone with information to come forward, and it is our hope that the perpetrators of this crime will be apprehended and swiftly brought to justice.”
