The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has welcomed the assurance by the World Medical Association (WMA) that it will not expel the Israeli Medical Association. In a statement released by the organisation’s President, the WMA said, “We have trust that our Israeli colleagues will stand firm on our values and the protection of human rights. They have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to the policies and positions taken by the WMA.”

This followed a letter signed by 71 British doctors asking the WMA to revoke the membership of the Israel Medical Association claiming that Israeli doctors have carried out “medical torture on Palestinian patients.” The ADC and the Australian Jewish Medical Federation (AJMF) denounced the  letter and noted that the petition was, “baseless and discriminatory in many ways.”

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:

“We welcome the rejection by the World Medical Association of this hideous campaign to malign and defame Israeli doctors. Those who signed this one-sided political advocacy letter, shamefully divorced from reality, have damaged the credibility of the British medical establishment. We are pleased that the WMA recognised how malicious the request was and urge doctors around the world to speak out against all efforts to boycott Israel and its medical professionals. Such efforts are not only shocking and unacceptable, but are inimical to the goals of the scientific and medical community which seeks to promote the principles of cooperation, research and treatment for the betterment of humanity. ”
