The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has applauded the convening of a special forum on Christian anti-Semitism organized by Proclaiming Justice to the Nations and the World Council of Independent Christian Churches, which represents 44 million Christians worldwide. The gathering, which was sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Israel, Palau and Cyprus, was attended by representatives from 13 permanent UN missions. Among the topics discussed were the growing problem of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism, and strategies to combat this ever-escalating threat. Participants were also encouraged to have their countries adopt the U.S State Department definition of anti-Semitism, and advocate for legislation protecting Jewish communities in their countries.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We very much welcome this important gathering which aimed to reach out to ambassadors of predominately Christian nations and equip them with effective strategies to deal with the resurgence of global anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s Nostra Aetate, which not only repudiated the ancient charge that the Jewish people were responsible for the death of Jesus, but also called on the Church to fight anti-Semitism, it is vital that states and religious organisations seek to rid their communities of the poison of anti-Semitism. Sadly, there are still a considerable number of mainline churches that preach Replacement Theology (which teaches that the church has replaced Israel in God’s plan and that the Jews are no longer God’s chosen people) and who still promote the false doctrine of deicide. Jewish communities have been subjected to frightening levels of violent assaults, harassment and other forms of discrimination, and we all have a duty to speak up, educate and help increase religious respect around the world. Every tool and mechanism must be utilized to raise awareness of this urgent issue and to meaningfully fight back against the tsunami of anti-Semitism. Only then, will Jews around the begin to feel more secure.”
