B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission condemns anti-Semitic graffiti sprayed on a sign featuring Marrickville Councillor Rosana Tyler

March 2, 2015

The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has vigorously condemneRosana graffitid the anti-Semitic defacement of a sign featuring Marrickville Councillor Rosana Tyler. The billboard, with a large picture of Councillor Tyler, was vandalised, with a Star of David sprayed inside a male sexual organ and an arrow pointing at Councillor Tyler. Councillor Tyler, who is Jewish, has been a strong campaigner against the BDS in Marrickville and recently voted on a special resolution to increase taxes. According to reports, none of the other councillors have been subjected to such an attack.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission issued the following statement:

“I am extremely troubled by the repugnant and vile personal attack on Councillor Tyler and find it disturbing that she has been singled out for intimidation because she is Jewish.  Such an offensive and ugly display of anti-Semitic graffiti is not only meant to recycle the dangerous and ugly myth about Jews being money-hungry, but is also intended to intimidate Councillor Tyler who has been an advocate against the BDS. This hurtful incident is yet another sad reminder that Jewish-hatred is still a persistent and frightening reality in Australia and that we have much work to do in countering this kind of sickening bigotry.  The ADC stands firmly with Councillor Tyler during this difficult time and strongly condemns this racist and defamatory act. We hope that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law so as to ensure that the community understands that anti-Semitism is not acceptable or permitted in our society.”
