The Anti-Defamation Commission has exposed share-house advertisements in Melbourne that list “no zios”, “anti-zio” and “zio free” among the requirements for new housemates, and called on authorities and Meta to act.
The ads, posted in the Fairy Floss Real Estate Facebook group, set out the bans alongside requests such as “no couples” and “no pets”. One listed “Zio scum” among the things the tenant hated.
“In Melbourne, there are homes with room for a visiting cat. Just not for a Jew,” said the commission’s chairman, Dr Dvir Abramovich. “A Jew looking for a home in this city is turned away at door after door after door by three letters: zio. Strip off the disguise and the message is naked: No Jews. Not here. Not ever.”
“Let no one pretend ‘zio’ is politics. It is a slur, popularised by Klan leader David Duke, a code word for ‘Jew’ dressed up for a younger crowd,” he said. “The people writing these ads call themselves anti-racist in the very same breath. Their compassion comes with a blacklist, and every name on that list is a Jew.”

A young Jewish man in his twenties, the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, who found the ads, said: “I was shocked by how openly and shamelessly I was being excluded because of who I am. It is an isolating and painful experience.”
Dr Abramovich called on the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to investigate, on Meta to remove and ban the ads, and on Consumer Affairs Victoria to act. “Jew-hatred in this country has been normalised, domesticated, made respectable,” he said. “Everyone is welcome in this city. Everyone but the Jew. They told us it could never happen here. Open your eyes: it already has.”
